ImageThe Karlspreis (Charlemagne prize) has been awarded every year on Ascension Day since 1950. Last year a militaristic Europe subservient to NATO was honored by giving the award to Javier Solana. This year the Karlspreis becomes the central event to spread neoliberal propaganda and glorify the concept of an imperial Europe. The rationale for awarding it to Merkel by Sarkozy this year is based upon the role these two played in the final negotations of the Lisbon Treaty. Through this the lack of consent on this issue, which became apparent by the French "Non" and the Dutch "no" to a neoliberal Europe and to a Europe of precarious living conditions for the youth and the persecution of illegalised migrants, shall be solved in an elitist way. It is a bitter irony of the calendar that Ascension Day falls on May 1st of all days this year.

Since more than a century this day is celebrated througout the whole world to remember the events of Chicago*. But the parties and labor unions of the left hand have annexed this date to celebrate themselves instead. In Europe this celebration continues to lose its meaning the further neoliberalism spreads. Nowadays the multinational corporations grant their employees May 1st off accompanied by a show of sponsoring or charity.

For us as precarious workers it had become necessary to reacquire May 1st and revive the real sense of this celebration, as a day of actions, of education and mobilization, a day of the expression and creativity. One which reveals the new realities of our lives, work and occupation.

The network Euromayday emerged in 2004. It gathers groups and individuals whose aim on the one hand consists of raising the question of the precarous conditions and for the assertion of new social rights at the European political level and on the other hand of organising a day of action including celebrations and parades in many European towns on May 1st.

This year the initiative Euromayday joins the alliance of different groups from the Rhineland to on the one hand protest against the award to Nicolas Sarkozy by Angela Merkel, and on the other hand to award the Prix Euromayday.

  • to everybody who hides refugees and helps them and fight against deportation centers everywhere in Europe
  • to everybody who occupies houses and creates and maintains social centers developing
  • to everybody who creates digital culture peer-to-peer and free software,
  • to everybody who must go to extremes to make it to month's end and pay all the bills,
  • to everybody who sacrifices themself to raise their children and secure food and accommodation for them, alone and without sufficient social support,
  • to everybody who foils the cruel plans of the exploiters of humanity,
  • to everybody who breaks through the disinformation creating their own media and take information into their own hands,
  • to everybody who refuses to accept sexuality as a purely private matter and fights against the acception of heterosexual norms
  • to everybody who will march in the Euromayday parades in Europe and elsewhere
*In the year 1886 over 300,000 people went on strike once more because their employers refused to reduce the working hours. The demonstration was ended by force. There were three dead under the strikers of the company Mac Cormick in Chicago. On the following day a protest march was organised against the repression. Haymarket Square became scene of a second drama: Seven policemen were killed, many demonstrators were injured. Although there was no evidence, five anarchistic labor unionists were sentenced to the death and three to life imprisonment terms for this.
